On June 12, 2025, an Air India flight en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff. One of the passengers, British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who was seated in 11A, survived the crash and was later spotted leaving the disaster site on foot.

Crash Details and Immediate Aftermath

The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 p.m. local time with 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board. Air India later confirmed via its X (formerly Twitter) account that the flight included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian.

Tragically, the aircraft went down just minutes into the flight, erupting in flames upon impact.

Survivor’s Story

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, who lives in London with his wife and child, had returned to India for a brief visit and was flying back with his 45-year-old brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh. The brothers were seated in different rows. Speaking from Civil Hospital in Asarwa, Vishwash recalled the terrifying moment:

“Just 30 seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise—and then everything went wrong. It happened so fast,” he told Hindustan Times, which also published an image of his boarding pass.

Still recovering from injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet, Vishwash said he regained consciousness amidst wreckage and chaos, then ran until someone helped him into an ambulance.

Desperate to find his missing brother, he pleaded:

“We had visited Diu together. He was flying with me, and now I can’t find him. Please help me locate him.”

Eyewitness Footage and Online Reaction

Footage shared by India Today NE appears to show Vishwash walking through debris, talking to bystanders while limping slightly, and being guided to an emergency vehicle. Cries and shouts can be heard in the background of the video.

Early Thursday morning, around 5 a.m. EST, Times Now posted a clip showing the aircraft flying unusually low before disappearing from view, followed by a fiery explosion and thick smoke rising into the sky.

Air India Responds

Roughly an hour after the incident, Air India issued a formal statement, confirming the crash and detailing the number of people onboard. Injured passengers were being treated in nearby hospitals. A helpline—1-800-569-1444—was activated for family members seeking updates.

The airline requested journalists to refrain from using the helpline, urging them instead to follow official updates on their website and X account.

Later in the day, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson held a press conference expressing deep condolences to those impacted. He stated that the airline’s primary concern was supporting survivors, their families, and those involved in emergency response.

Wilson reviewed the details of the crash and emphasized Air India’s collaboration with local authorities. A dedicated support team was sent to Ahmedabad to assist further. He urged the public and media to avoid speculation and promised updates only when information was confirmed.

Royal Response

As India is a member of the Commonwealth, King Charles III and Queen Camilla released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident. They offered condolences to families across the affected nations and praised the emergency personnel working tirelessly at the crash site.
